Al Hilal 0-0 Umm Salal (3-4 on pens): Umm Salal stun Saudis

RIYADH Umm Salal of Qatar became the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the 2009 AFC Champions League after stunning Al Hilal with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory on Tuesday.

The Saudi giants were heavily favoured to advance but their sputtering attack could find no way past goalkeeper Baba Malick and the resolute Umm Salal defence in a goalless 120 minutes of action.

Aziz Ben Askar missed the opening penalty for Umm Salal but Malick saved efforts by Tareq El Taib and Mohammed Al Shalhoub to silence the home crowd and send the Qataris through to the last eight.

The home side had begun brightly with Swedish forward Christian Wilhelmsson linking up well with Yasser Al Qahtani who sent in a dangerous cross that Korea Republic international Seol Ki-hyeon just failed to connect with.

But goal scoring opportunities were few and far between in a disappointing first-half with the only other chance of note being a 31st minute header by Osama Hawsawi that went inches past the left upright.

Seol had a shot saved by Malick a minute into the second half but the visitors twice threatened to take the lead as Brazilian Magno Alves, who played as a lone striker in the absence of the injured Aala Hubail, headed wide in the 49th minute before seeing his dangerous ball into the six-yard box hacked away by Mohammed Al Nakhli under pressure.

Wilhelmsson and Al Qahtani had disappointing matches and were replaced by Al Shalhoub and Ahmed Al Suwaileh in the second-half.

With extra time looming, El Taib made a strong run into the Umm Salal box but failed to hit the target.

There was little action in the first period of extra time but after the teams switched ends, the home side turned up the heat with Al Shalhoub shooting just wide from close range after jinking his way into the Umm Salal box.

Baba Malick then denied Al Suwaileh with three minutes remaining to set up the drama of the penalty shootout.

Ben Askar duly handed Al Hilal the advantage when he blasted Umm Salals first attempt well over the crossbar but Malick levelled the scored at 2-2 when he made an excellent save, diving to his right to deny El Taib.

Ibrahima Nadiya converted Umm Salals final regulation kick to make it 4-3 and Al Shalhoubs weak low attempt was pushed around the right post by Malick to spark celebrations for the visitors.
